The big dudes dominated the first round of the NFL Entry Draft with Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher selected as the no.1 overall pick by the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday in New York.
The 6-foot-7, 306-pound Fisher became the person to be called on the stage by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell at the Radio Music Hall.
Fisher has been named Associated Press third-team All-American and Sports Illustrated second-team All-American for his remarkable senior season with Chippewas.
He became the first player from the Mid-American Conference to be selected first overall in the NFL Draft as the Chiefs track new direction under the tutelage of Andy Reid, who has the history of picking big lineman in the draft.
"This is so surreal," Fisher said. "I'm ready to get to work right now. I'm ready to start playing some football. I can't process what's going on right now."
It was a big night for the linemen who occupied the first seven and 17 of the 32 picks in this year's draft.
"That's a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don't get," said Fisher, who wowed scouts with his incredible agility and power.
Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel was selected no.2 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars while defensive end Dion Jordan was picked no.3 overall by the Miami Dolphins. Lane Johnson (OT, Philadelphia Eagles), Ezekiel Ansah (DE, Detroit Lions), Barkevious Mingo (DE, Cleveland Browns), Jonathan Cooper (Guard, Arizona Cardinals) round out the top-seven.
West Virginia wideout Tavon Austin became the first non-linemen to be called in the draft after he was chosen no.8 overall by the St. Louis Rams.
Among the quarterbacks, only Florida State's E.J. Manuel was chosen in the first round. He was picked no.16 by the Buffalo Bills.
The second and third round of the draft will start at 6:30 p.m on Friday at the Radio City Music Hall. Big names such as West Virginia's quarterback Geno Smith, Notre Dame's linebacker, Manti Te'o, and USC's Matt Barkley have yet to be called.
