Former President Bill Clinton has joined Twitter with a personal account, so expect a few off-the-cuff remarks from the Democratic Party's leader emeritus to start making headlines.

Clinton has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since his stint on the campaign trail for President Obama during last year's campaign, and he's emerged as a leading figure in progressive apologetics, offering simple explanations for liberal policies for the layperson in his folksy vernacular.

He started off with shoutouts to his daughter, Chelsea, as well as faux-conservative comedian and political activist Stephen Colbert.

"Just spent amazing time with Colbert! Is he sane? He is cool! #cgiu," was Clinton's very first tweet earlier this month. Now Clinton seems to be getting the hang of the medium, tweeting four times in the last day.

"Sorry I couldn't make it @StephenAtHome. I've been busy with @Clintonfdn work on global heath. Thrs is #WorldMalariaDay you know #Raincheck?" Clinton tweeted late Wednesday night.

Colbert set up a fake Twitter account for Clinton when the former president visited his Comedy Central show early in April. "Well, sir, I took the liberty of opening you a Twitter account," Colbert said at the time. "Now @presidentclinton was taken, @williamjeffersonclinton was taken, but @prezbillyjeff was available," Colbert said at the time. That account has since been locked.

Clinton already has nearly 400,000 followers, though he obviously hasn't spent much time choosing accounts to follow. Right now, Clinton is following eight other accounts, most of which are tied to his Clinton Foundation initiatives. The other two are Colbert and Chelsea Clinton.

Of course, Twitter works in both directions, so the public has started to speak directly to the former leader of the free world. Perhaps Clinton will even honor some of them by following their minute missives.

No word on how much direct control Clinton will have over the account, as he has plenty of aides to do all that for him, but Clinton is known for being hands-on, particularly as he makes the rounds as brand ambassador for the emocratic Party and American interests.

Next up, Hillary Clinton?
