From Mr. T to Donald Trump, WWE loves to have celebrities in the ring. And Cody Rhodes looks to get one in particular into the squared circle-Morgan Freeman.
In a recent interview with Sowetan Live, Rhodes, a former Intercontinental champion and the son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, joked that the celebrity he would like most to mix it up with in the ring in Freeman, an Academy Award-winning actor best known as of late for his portrayals of hi-tech inventor Lucius Fox in the recent Christopher Nolan-directed Batman trilogy.
"I feel like I could win because he's old; although I'm sure he's tough," Rhodes joked.
"But then we could sell it and he could narrate the match, like he narrates everything. He could explain everything because he's such a great storyteller he could tell the story of me beating him. That would be wonderful," Rhodes added.
It would not be the first time that a celebrity has stepped up and laced up wrestling boots.
Some of the more famous incidents of celebrities getting in the ring involved Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper for WrestleMania 2, NFL great Lawrence Taylor fighting Bam Bam Bigelow in the main event of WrestleMania 11, Dennis Rodman teaming with Hulk Hogan against Lex Luger and The Giant in WCW's Bash at the Beach 1997, Mike Tyson being the special enforcer at WrestleMania 14's main event between Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin, Donald Trump and Vince McMahon on opposing corners for WrestleMania 27, and Maria Menounos teaming with Kelly Kelly against Beth Phoenix and Eve Torres at WrestleMania 28 last year.
It's a well-known fact that WWE loves to do anything that can draw attention in the main stream media. And should Rhodes be able to land Freeman in a match, it might give him a good rub with WWE officials backstage, who could reward Rhodes' initiative with a renewed singles push, perhaps even a World Title push.
In other news, WrestleMania 29 has been declared to be the highest-grossing WrestleMania event ever. WWE announced this week that the April 7 PPV held at MetLife Stadium, which featured John Cena vs. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the main event, drew earnings of $72 million from ticket sales and pay-per-view buys.
And could WrestleMania one day see the final return of Kurt Angle? The former 1996 Olympic gold medalist amateur wrestler and six-time world champion with WWE talked in an interview this week with 105.9 FM in Pittsburgh, his home town, about wanting to retire in the next three years.
His retirement scenario, the currently-contracted TNA star said, wouldn't rule out a return to WWE, possibly for WrestleMania.
"I love it in TNA. I've been very, very happy here. They treat me very well. You just never know," Angle said. "The way I want to retire, I want to go out with a bang. I'm hoping to God that within the next three years, we can have somewhat of a PPV that is minutely close to WrestleMania. But, we don't. Not yet. But, you know, everyone always wants to retire at WrestleMania."
"It's a hard thing because I want to stay in TNA - I love it there - but when you have the opportunity to go back and perform in front of millions of people on PPV and 100,000 fans in the stadium, it's kind of hard not to. But, like I said, I am happy in TNA and this is where I want to stay."
