A body found in the Providence River on Tuesday is believed to be the missing Brown University student, Sunil Tripathi, who disappeared March 16, CNN reports from police sources.
A rowing coach from Brown discovered the body near India Point Park and reported the incident to police, according to Lindsay Lague, spokeswoman for the Providence Police Department.
The identity of the body has yet to be determined, but a medical examiner may be able to find out as early as Thursday morning.
Detective Mark Sacco said that the body is "likely" that of the missing college student, but still encouraged the use of caution until a positive identity is confirmed.
The 22-year-old philosophy major was last seen in Providence, Rhode Island in the middle of March, walking on Brook Street---a location not far from his home.
Tripathi was falsely accused of being one of the Boston Marathon bombers via Facebook. That is when his family, after a flood of nasty comments, took down a page on the social media site that they were using to help track down Tripathi.
"He was seen on the 15, Friday, hanging out with friends, talking to family members, all normal activities, nothing out of the ordinary that anyone detected," Tripathi's brother Ravi told CNN affiliate WPRI.
But Tripathi has been reportedly coping with depression for some time.
The FBI and other law enforcement officials engaged in a search for Tripathi shortly after he was reported missing.
He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black Eastern Mountain Sports ski jacket, glasses and a black Philadelphia Eagles wool hat.
Tripathi's family has reinstated the Facebook page designed to help locate Sunil.
