This past weekend "Filly Brown" opened in limited release to successful results.
The Jenni Rivera and Gina Rodriguez starrer opened to a surprising $1.3 million in 188 theaters. The film averaged an outstanding $7,250 per theater.
Rob Williams, Production Executive for Indomina Media stated, "It's a strong opening that focused on the core Latino audience. The film will expand into more markets this week."
The films opening was helped by scoring an A- on CinemaScore and by the fact that over 20 locations had the film as their number one grosser in their respective complex. It even outgrossed "Oblivion," which led the overall box office this weekend. Additionally, 71% of the audience was female.
"Filly Brown" tells the story of a promising hip-hop rhymer from Los Angeles who finds herself in a gray area when a record producer offers her a compromising shot at stardom.
Reviews were mixed with Variety stating "A trite piece of storytelling, with character development and plot points that feel not so much lived in as borrowed from other movies." Hollywood Reporter was more positive and stated "Gina Rodriguez's magnetic star turn keeps this often overwrought film engaging, even when the script lets her down."
The movie was directed by Youssef Delara (Bedrooms) and Michael D. Olmos (Splinter).
Rivera died last December in a plane crash. Rivera's last documented footage is currently part of a reality TV show "I Love Jenni." Her family is also planning on releasing an English language album she recorded before her death. She will also compete on April 25th for the Billboard Artist of the Year.
Indomina recently announced that "Filly Brown" would be the final film the company would distribute in the US. The distributor also released "LUV" with Common in January.
"Filly Brown" is rated R for language, some drug use and violence.
