The Veronica Mars feature film Kickstarter closed this past weekend, setting a number of all-time site records. The campaign grossed a whopping $5,702,153 against a $2 million goal.

The Kickstarter's massive success nearly guarantees that Kristen Bell's private investigator will finally be heading to the big screen. Over the month long campaign, Veronica Mars set records for the highest number of Kickstarter backers (91,585), the fastest project to reach $1 million, the fastest project to reach $2 million, the all-time highest funded project ever in the "Film" category, and the third highest funded project in the site's history behind the Ouya and Pebble Watch.

The Veronica Mars movie will head into production this summer, and will kick off its publicity campaign at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

Veronica Mars was originally a TV series created by Rob Thomas. It starred Kristen Bell as high school student moonlighting as a private detective. Despite significant critical acclaim and a passionate fan base, the series was abruptly cancelled after three seasons. With many of the character and story arcs left unfinished, talks of a feature length movie to close the series outright have been in talks for almost five years.

On March 13, 2013, Rob Thomas and Bell finally took the idea to the crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter to raise the money to finish the project. Warner Bros. agreed to distribute it if the campaign was successful in raising the $2 million required to shoot the film. The Veronica Mars Kickstarter campaign hit that goal in less than ten hours, with the final sum flying past $5.5 million in total.

You can follow the film's progress at its official Facebook page or YouTube channel. The film is tentatively set for a limited theatrical and VOD release in early 2014, with a Blu-ray/DVD launch to follow.
