Edward James Olmos recently stated that Jenni Rivera should get nominated and win an Oscar for her role in "Filly Brown."
The Oscar nominee told "EL Gordo y La Flaca" that Jenni Rivera's performance in the movie was outstanding and that she should win an Oscar. He also said that the movie is incredibly dramatic and was surprised Rivera could pull off such a feat.
He added that once the movie is over, Rivera fans and movie goers will have a lasting impression and will even cry.
Co-Star Gina Rodriguez also stated that she loved working with Rivera and that after her death it is difficult to watch the movie. She added that La Diva de La Banda was a great inspiration.
Rodriguez also admitted that she was scared to work with a non-actress like Rivera but was willing to take the adventure. She added that she had a month of rehearsals with the singer and they were able to share their stories.
The film recently premiered at the Miami International Film Festival and had its world premiere at the Sundance Film festival where it received mixed reviews. The Hollywood Reporter stated "Gina Rodriguez's magnetic star turn keeps this often overwrought film engaging, even when the script lets her down."
However Variety was critical of it and stated, "A trite piece of storytelling, with character development and plot points that feel not so much lived in as borrowed from other movies."
The movie was directed by Youssef Delara (Bedrooms) and Michael D. Olmos (Splinter).
Olmos is an Academy Award nominee best known for his work on "Miami Vice" and "Blade Runner." He will next be seen in "Go for Sisters" and "2 Guns." Rodriguez was last seen in "The Bold and Beautiful" and will next be seen in "Snap and "Sleeping with the Fishes."
Rivera died last December in a plane crash. Her family is currently developing a biopic film which is rumored to star Alicia Machado.
"Filly Brown" will be distributed by Lionsgate on April 19th.
