Ecstasy and Despair. Both Malaga and Borussia Dortmund felt each in the waning moments of the second leg in the 2013 Champions league quarterfinals. However, it was Borussia that wound up with the full dose of sublime ecstasy.
Entering the match, the aggregate was level at 0-0 after both teams failed to score in the first leg in Spain. Malaga got off to the ideal start when Joaquin scored in the 25th minute off a snipe just outside the box that eluded the defenders. However, Borussia retained the equalizer when Robert Lewandowski scored in the 40th.
The second half featured end to end action with each team trying to seal the deal. At this point, Malaga held the advantage on the away goal but the game remained in a draw until high drama took over in the final ten minutes.
Malaga's Eliseu seemed to provide the antidote that would send the Spanish side through to its first ever semifinals berth when he scored into an empty net in the 82nd minute.
With the two away goals, it seemed like Malaga would win even if the Germans managed a draw; at that point Borussia would need two goals to pass.
With the time winding down, the seemingly impossible happened. Marco Reus cashed in on a defensive mix-up in the first minute of stoppage time to level the aggregate at two, but Felipe Santana provided the cure for Borussia's ailing despair when he poked the ball over the line just a little over a minute later. The ball was lobbed into the air and chaos ensued. The ball eventually found its way to Santana who stood in an offside position. He slid the ball into the net and the referees let the play stand.
The 3-2 win pushed Borussia into the semi-finals for the first time in 15 years.
