Last week's episode of 'Grey's Anatomy,' entitled "She's Killing Me," was an emotional roller coaster, with the staff of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital opening their facilities to two Syrian doctors who hoped to learn the nitty-gritty for battlefield surgery. While the staff helped them learn how to do surgical procedures with limited supplies, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) dealt with the confirmed news that Mer tested positive for the Alzheimer's gene.
The couple, who has gone through hospital shootings and plane crashes, pushed through to update Meredith's living will as well as making preparations in case she develops the disease like her mother. Meredith became so worried that she even tried to convince best friend Christina (Sandra Oh) to take guardianship of Zola and her unborn son. Although Christina said she'll love the children, she can only promise to be "the greatest aunt ever." To ease Meredith's worry, Derek got himself mapped out and discovered he has genes for two types of cancer, heroine usage and gasp male baldness.
The episode, which centered heavily on MerDer, also focused a great deal on Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) gene mapping project, as well as some post-op complications that arise for three of her patients. While Bailey and her fellow doctors at first place the blame on her intern Dr. Leah Murphy (Tessa Ferrer), it is soon discovered that Bailey is the common factor among the three infected patients and not Leah. The plot hurdle opens up a series of difficulties for Bailey, as well as the newly established board committee.
Meanwhile, April (Sarah Drew), Owen (Kevin McKidd), Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) help the two visiting Syrian doctors learn surgical procedures that could save lives during the revolution back in Syria. As she works with the two doctors, April comes to the conclusion that she must come clean to her boyfriend Matthew (guest star Justin Bruening) about her virginity. Telling him the truth, however, leads him to break up with her and makes her give the Syrian doctors some expensive medical equipment in rebellion.
'Grey's Anatomy' will be taking a somewhat short two-week hiatus and will be returning with the season's 21st episode on April 25. However, while fans wait, consulting producer Dan Bucatinsky told TVLine, "The last two episodes of the season work together as a giant two-week finale." Bucatinsky added that the season's 22nd episode, entitled 'Do You Believe in Magic,' is "an exploration of magic." He said, "The magic of medicine, and also the magic of romance and the ways in which the revelation of a secret can play both as a blessing or a curse."
'Grey's Anatomy' airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
