Matthew McConaughey revealed that he will play the lead in Christopher Nolan's new project "Interstellar."

After rumors appeared last week that the actor was offered the role, McConaughey told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he was confirming the news and he would portray Cooper. When the newspaper asked him about the film, the actor stated "I'm Confirming" and said nothing more.

Nolan is known for keeping his projects secret and no other casting news has been revealed. However a short synopsis was revealed by the Guardian. They said the film was about a group of space travelers that journey through a wormhole. The script is currently being rewritten by Nolan's brother Jonathan.

McConaughey enjoyed the best year of his career in 2012 appearing in numerous acclaimed films. He starred in "Magic Mike" for which he garnered numerous awards including the Indie Spirit Award. He also starred in Richard Linklater's "Bernie," and William Friedkin's "Killer Joe." McConaughey is currently shooting the HBO series "True Detective" directed by Cary Fukunaga and will next be seen in the acclaimed film "Mud."  He will also be seen in Martin Scorsese's "Wolf of Wall Street" and "Dallas Buyers Club."

"Interstellar" has been in production for a few years and previously had other major directors attached to it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Spielberg was once slated to direct the film but decided to leave the project. However it is unclear if he remains attached to it in any capacity. The film was originally in production through Paramount Studios but since Nolan has a contract with Warner Bros., the film would be a joint venture by the two studios.

"Interstellar" is slated to start shooting later this year and will open in theaters on November 27, 2014.
