The makers of the upcoming film "Star Trek Into Darkness" have beamed over a new promo to a TV near you.
Many of the spot's highlights are familiar, from the sci-fi flick's handful of theater trailers and extended sneak-peaks.
At this point, with "Into Darkness" only a little more than a month away from its U.S. wide release May 17, the fact so much of the promos are a regurgitation of stuff theater-goers have already sees is a good thing, because it suggests that director J.J. Abrams in staying true to his promise to keep the story interesting for fans.
However, away from screens of any kind, Star Trek magazine quoted "Into Darkness" writer Roberto Orci shared a little more about Cumberbatch's villain, the specifics of which have been a well-guarded secret.
Said Orci about the character known as John Harrison: "Well he understands Starfleet because he was enlisted in a similar way. Some might see part of the title coming from the fact that he's kind of a dark shadow of members of our crew. He too has gone through the process to some degree, that some of our crew have gone though, and clearly for some reason it's failed to bring him over, so I think he represents that part of our heroes."
"Star Trek Into Darkness" stars Chris Pine as Captain James Kirk, Zachary Quinto and Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scottie, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, Karl Urban as Dr. "Bones" McCoy, John Cho as Sulu, Bruce Greenwood as Chistopher Pike, Benedict Cumberbatch as the mysterious villain John Harrison and Alice Eve as Dr. Dr. Carol Marcus.
The film is due to burst onto IMAX screens May 15 and in regular cinemas on May 17.
Here's a portion of the official plot synopsis:
"When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
"With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."
