The impossible has happened. Glastonbury festival just got better. The Rolling Stones announced Wednesday night that they will be headlining this year's festival at Worthy Farm for the first time. The news may come as a surprise to fans however, as in 2011 Mick Jagger told BBC "I don't want to play Glastonbury on Sunday night in the pouring rain, which is what The Who did this year. I was watching it on the telly, and my kids were there. I was on the phone saying 'it's awful.'"
Regardless of the notorious bad weather, it looks like Jagger and the rest of the band decided to suck it up and embrace the festival's magic. Jagger announced the news on is Twitter saying, "Can't wait to play Glastonbury. I have my willies and my yurt!"
On Thursday morning, John Humphrey's from BBC Radio 4 Today asked festival founder and organizer Michael Eavis, "So that's it now, isn't it? You've had all the big names!"
"It really is the best job," responded Humphrey's without really answering the question, simply glowing with excitement. "I nearly fell down the stairs, so eager to get on with it."
"It is about as big a coup as we ever though would be possible," said Emily Eavis, Michael's daughter. "It is something we never thought we'd be able to pull off - a dream booking. We've tried or talked about getting The Rolling Stones to play Glastonbury throughout my entire life - I can't remember a year it hasn't been wished upon."
The Eavis's aren't the only ones who are excited to play at Glastonbury. In addition to Jagger's comments, Stones' guitarist Keith Richards also had some encouraging words for fans. "We all had such a ball last year, and the energy between the band is so good, we can't wait to play Glastonbury, see on a summer's day in England."
Let's pray that there's no torrential downpour at this year's festival, but even so, no matter, we've got The Stones.
