Terrence Malick's latest film "To the Wonder" will premiere on VOD.
The film being released on April 12th by Magnolia Entertainment will hit Video On Demand and theaters on the same day.
The company follows their successful pattern from Lars von Trier's "Melancholia" which was available on VOD and theaters at the same time. "Melancholia garnered $2 million while on demand. The studio hopes Malick's film can gain a wider audience and also bring his passionate fans to the platform.
Regardless of its VOD release, Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles, stated"To the Wonder" will qualify for the 2013 Oscars. The company anticipates expanding the film to a level similar to most of their releases. "Melancholia" at its widest point played at 134 theaters.
"To the Wonder" tells the story of Marina and Neil who go to Oklahoma, where problems arise. Marina meets a priest and fellow exile, who is struggling with his vocation, while Neil renews his ties with a childhood friend, Jane.
Malick last directed "The Tree of Life" for which he garnered an Academy Award nomination for best director. The film also garnered a nomination for Best Picture.
The film premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals where it received mixed reviews. The Hollywood Reporter stated "However accomplished Malick's technique might be in some ways, this mostly comes off, especially in the laborious second hour, as visual doodling without focused thematic goals."
"To The Wonder" stars Ben Affleck (Argo), Javier Bardem (Skyfall), Olga Kuryalenko (Quantum of Solace), and Rachel McAdams (Midnight in Paris) and is rated R for some sexuality/nudity.
