The daughter of New York real estate mogul and multi-millionaire Peter Kalikow was released without bail after getting caught selling heroin in a working class neighborhood in the Bronx, NY on Monday.
Peter Kalikow's 27-year-old daughter Kathryn was busted with her 28-year-old boyfriend Brian Whalen after selling the drug to an undercover NYPD officer on Sunday. The couple arranged the sale through an ad on Craigslist. A detective responded to the ad and met with the pair in the Fordham section of the Bronx where they were arrested.
Whalen admitted to being a drug addict who sold heroin in order to feed his addiction. According to the New York Post, their attorney said they will enter treatment programs.
"It was my idea to go on Craigslist and post the ad," Whalen confessed, according to court papers. "I need treatment. I am a heroin addict, and to afford the drugs I agreed to sell some of the drug on consignment from the person I buy from."
Prosecutors say that Kalikow also admitted to "holding" drugs for her boyfriend and was carrying 10 packets of heroin in her purse.
The couple met while attending Vassar College, an elite college in upstate New York. They both live with Kalikow's parents in a posh penthouse worth $4.9 million on Fifth Avenue.
Kalikow and Whalen were arraigned in the Bronx on Monday on drug counts and released on their own recognizance without bail. They both pleaded not guilty..
Peter Kalikow owns a major real estate firm, has served as the former MTA Chairman and is the former owner the New York Post newspaper. The 71-year-old tycoon was once worth at least $500 million. He says he and his wife are concentrating on helping their daughter, while Whalen's family is trying to rush him into rehab, sources said.
