Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati resigned from office on Friday after a deadlock in his cabinet over preparations for a parliamentary election, Al Jazeera reported. During a news conference on Friday, Mikati said, "I announce the resignation of the government."

According to the Associated Press, Lebanese media have speculated that Mikati would resign over the extension of tenure of Lebanon's police chief, Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi. Hezbollah, the Shiite militant group that rules parliament and is against Rifi, has said that it would not support any extension, the AP reported.

Before Mikati's resignation is official, it will need to be accepted by President Michel Suleiman.

More details to come.
