Spain is the reigning World Cup Champion, but the team's spot in the 2014 World Cup is far from secure. The team has a major battle against France on March 26. The game will likely decide the group winners and will probably condemn the loser to a two legged playoff to qualify for the tournament.
Manager Vicente Del Bosque's roster featured a wealth of new surprises. Fernando Torres, often a favorite of Del Bosque's in other tournaments and qualifiers was left out. According to SB Nation, "Del Bosque explained to the media that Torres' inconsistent form in the past two seasons has put doubts in his mind that he's the right player to lead the Spanish attack." In his stead, David Villa, Alvaro Negredo, and Jesus Navas will lead the offense. Another player selected to lead the offense has been Chelsea star Juan Mata. A number of pundits were baffled when Mata was omitted from Del Bosque's list in the fall qualifiers, but his play in the 2012-13 season has demonstrated that he is one of the best players in the world.
Another surprise is the addition of David De Gea as the third keeper. With national hero Iker Casillas recovering from a hand injury De Gea has finally been given a chance with the national side. It is unlikely that he sees time however as Pepe Reina and Victor Valdes as more likely starters for Spain.
Spain plays Finland on Friday at home before traveling to France for the crucial match on Tuesday March 26.
