When it comes to trades, no one knows how to garner the spotlight better than Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. The manager shipped off an unsuspecting Jeff Carter despite assuring him that he would never leave the Flyers. He did the same with former captain Mike Richards that same summer of 2011. It seems that the next guy that could potentially be shipped out of Philadelphia is Danny Briere.
At age 35, the forward is unlikely to sustain his high level of play. Considering the deep forward prospect pool the Flyers currently have, his value for them continues to diminish. The Flyers do not need goal scorers, they need defensemen. Considering the interest he has garnered, it likely that he could bring in that missing piece.
Bleacher Report's Nicholas Goss writes that the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins are interested in adding Briere to their arsenal of forwards for the depth and leadership he could bring. Those teams could in turn provide the Flyers with the defenseman that they are after. According to Flyer's fan blog Broad Street Hockey, the Blues are of great interest to Philadelphia because of the possibility of grabbing Kevin Shattenkirk. The website does concede that it would take more than Briere to bring an elite defender like Shattenkirk to the "City of Brotherly Love."
Despite the rumors circulating, it seems that Briere is intent on staying with the Flyers. "I don't want to comment on anything at this point," he told the Daily News. "Trades are not my department. I've been a Flyer for a long time. My heart belongs in Philadelphia with the Flyers. I can't see myself playing anywhere else."
The Flyers are currently five points out of a playoff spot with 20 games to play.
