Metropolitan Opera Preview: German Soprano Diana Damrau Makes her Role Debut in La Traviata

On Thursday March 14^th Verdi's "La Traviata" will open at the Metropolitan Opera in Willy Decker's acclaimed production.

The opera, based on the Alexandre Dumas' "La Dame aux Camelias," tells the story of Violetta Valery who gives up her love for Alfredo when his father asks her to leave him.

The opera is one of the most popular in the repertoire and features popular pieces such as the famous Brindisi and Violetta's cabaletta "Sempre Libera."  For this revival the Met will bring the Decker production back after two successful runs. The production, which was first seen 2005, is famous for bringing stars Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon to fame and is known for its demanding stage direction and for its minimalism.

The production will star Diana Damrau in her role debut. The German soprano was recently interviewed by Latinos Post's David Salazar and she stated during the interview that "La Traviata" was her Utopia and the reason for her becoming an Opera star.

Rising star Saimir Pirgu will sing Alfredo in his first appearance with the company since his debut in 2009. Legendary tenor Placido Domingo adds another role to his distinguished career in his role debut as Giorgio Germont. The tenor stated in an interview that he has a long history with the opera after singing the role of Gastone, Alfredo and conducting the work.

Canadian conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin adds another work to his repertoire leading the Met Orchestra.

The production will also be performed on March 18, 23, 26, 30, April 3, and 6.
