When "Star Wars Episode 7" was announced many rumored that Joss Whedon could be the ideal candidate to direct the new franchise. The film ultimately went to JJ Abrams and looks to bring back characters from the original trilogy. Had Whedon been the director, he would never have taken that direction with the franchise.
"I wouldn't go back. I'd go forward. I would want to create characters that would resonate the way that [the original trilogy's characters] did. Not that I wouldn't want to see them... I'd be excited to," said Whedon during an interview with DigiSpy. "But I also feel like I would want to explore a very different part of that universe."
He did concede that if the original characters were to return, the original cast members should play the roles. "[Recasting] I would never want to do. Some things may not be rebooted," he added.
Whedon is currently promoting his latest film "Much Ado About Nothing" which the helmer called "the sexiest thing I've ever done, and that includes having sex."'
The film has been getting terrific reviews with Tyler Mager of The Scorecard Review stating, "It takes some time getting used to but if you are patient, Much Ado About Nothing is a rewarding and enjoyable adaptation that could have been easily phoned in and made more conventionally. Instead we get some impressive performances and a brilliant example of keeping the old while embracing something new."
The Film School Rejects adds, "Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's best and most memorable plays, and Whedon has delivered a whimsical, enchanting and laugh aloud adaptation that should find a welcome embrace with fans new and old. His decision to update the setting while retaining the language finds a near perfect balance between new visual opportunities and the Bard's impeccable words."
