Anything can happen on live TV, as fans who listened to Doug Glanville's commentary during a spring training baseball game Monday.
Glanville was caught on camera during a game between the Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals comparing the current injury-laden roster situation of the Yankees to the acclaimed 2009 film "Brokeback Mountain"
"They have basically Brokeback Mountain going over here. I mean everybody's on the disabled list or hurt in some form or fashion," Glanville said during game Monday.
For those who may be unfamiliar with the reference, "Brokeback Mountain" was an Oscar-winning film from 2009, which starred Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ann Hathaway and Michelle Williams, that was controversial in part due to ledger and Gyllenhaal's portrayal of gay cowboys.
That likely wasn't what Glanville, a former MLB player with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers who became an ESPN color commentator in 2010, was referring to, although that didn't stop word of his comments from going viral.
The comments likely indicated that Glanville was more familiar with the "Brokeback" part of the movie's title than the plot of the movie, which was more centered around romance in the Wild West days.
However, Glanville's point, while misunderstood, did stand true, as the Yankees are dealing with a situation in which they have a litany of injuries to key players on their roster, including Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixera, and are just getting back Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter from season-ending injuries last year.
The injury situation on the Yankees has even prompted Yankees GM Brian Cashman to reach out to retired Atlanta Braves slugger Chipper Jones to see if he would be interested in dusting off his cleats and putting on Yankees pinstripes this season.
