"Prometheus" star Michael Fassbender has dropped out of Lynne Ramsey's "Jane Got a Gun."

Fassbender was supposed to play the male lead alongside Natalie Portman in the upcoming film. According to sources Fassbender was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with "X-Men: Days of Future Past" in which he will reprise the role of Magneto.

Joel Edgerton, who was on board to play the villain, will replace Fassbender and play the hero role as Dan Frost, Jane's ex-lover. Jude Law has stepped in as the villain Bill Hammond who will be the leader of the gang that lays siege to the homestead.

The film tells the story of a woman whose outlaw husband returns home riddled with bullet wounds and barely alive. When her husband's gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job, she is forced to reach out to an ex-lover and ask if he will help defend her farm.

Fassbender last starred in Ridley Scott's "Prometheus." He received his first Golden Globe nominee for his turn in the film "Shame." He will be seen later this year in Steve McQueen's "Twelve Years a Slave."

Edgerton recently starred in the Academy Award nominated "Zero Dark Thirty" with Jessica Chastain and will next appear in "The Great Gatsby" with Leonardo Dicaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. Law is currently starring in "Side Effects" and received praise for his role in "Anna Karenina." He just wrapped shooting on Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel."

Portman recently wrapped Terrence Malick's "Knights of Cup" and his untitled film. She also wrapped "Thor: The Dark World."

"Jane Got a Gun" will begin production in April and will be produced by Scott Steindorff, Aleen Keshishian, and Terry Dougas.
