Disney has canceled the animated show Star Wars: Clone Wars after five seasons. The move is the latest step in the conglomerate's takeover of the internationally renowned franchise.
"After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series," the company reveals on the official Star Wars website. "As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming."
Interestingly, the announcement notes that more "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" episodes could be on the way, albeit in a different iteration. "While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we're continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen," the announcement adds.
The series is set between "Episode II" and "Episode III" and portrayed the Clone Wars of the title. Voice actor James Arnold Taylor, the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the series, thanks his fans on his blog for the support. "It gave the first generation of Star Wars fans the chance to share their love of the franchise with their children, making new generations of fans," Taylor wrote. "It regenerated past characters we'd thought we'd never see again - sometimes to this Jedi's displeasure - and it even brought us new characters and new depths of understanding to our favorite ones."
