YouTube's most celebrated performer could make history all over again. In 2012, Psy first posted the music video to his song "Gangnam Style." The video became an instant hit and received worldwide recognition. On December 21, 2012, it became the first YouTube video to reach one billion views and currently has over 1.4 billion. The superstar has now announced the release of his follow-up single for April 13.
The Korean performer is also sticking close to his roots. Although he will host a concert in anticipation of his new single's release during a worldwide YouTube broadcast on April 13, Psy will give his fellow Koreans a chance to hear the song first.
"Psy expressed his wishes to reveal the song first to Korean fans, who have supported and cheered him on for a long time," according to YG entertainment. The April 12 Korean release will allow fans in attendance to enjoy the new track to the fullest.
The tickets for his single release concert went on sale Tuesday morning, March 11, and all 10,000 available tickets sold out in just 30 minutes. Psy gained his popularity and fame from just the one track, and the millions planning to watch the live April 13 concert at the World Cup Stadium in South Korea are all probably wondering the same thing: can he do it again?
Sometimes certain trends catch on without explicit explanation. They can just take off. An identifiable ingredient catches the public's eye and doesn't let go. Internet trends are a mysterious phenomenon, and the release of Psy's new single could offer insight into the viral trends.
Did "Gangnam Style" hit the scene at the right place at the right time, or is Psy a social media genius? His next single is bound to attract millions of views riding off the success of his "Gangnam Style," but will fans take to it the same way? Will it spark a worldwide trend and reach one billion views on YouTube?
These are all questions that will be answered on April 13. Until then, just be glad that another song will soon shroud "Gangnam Style." One billion views could be the definition of "played out."
