A two-year old Colorado boy was killed in Mexico by an ex-boyfriend of the babysitter who was hired to keep an eye on the child while his parents were away.
Axel Charrette was drowned during a February 28 attack on his family's vacation home in Sayulita, the Associated Press reports. Police have arrested and charged Eleodoro Carlos Rodriguez Sanchez with rape and murder alleging that he walked into the house, grabbed Charrette and threw him into a pool.
Sanchez was the ex-boyfriend of babysitter, Nancy Saralee Solorio Perez, who police also charged with homicide for not attempting to prevent the boy's death and then lying about it medical officials.
The boy's parents were not home during the attack and the boy's seven-year-old brother was locked inside the house but did not witness his brother's death, reports say.
The Charrette family returned to Colorado on Monday. Reports say the grieving family was warmly greeted by neighbors eager to support the family. Family spokesman, Brian Scranton, told the Associated Press that neighbors have created an assistance fund, named a bike trail in memory of the two-year-old victim, and have opened their doors for visiting Charrette family members.
"There's something amazing about it," Scranton said. "Whatever they need, it's been given to them without question."
