The casting of "Star Wars Episode 7" has turned out to be filled with as many twists and turns as the six part saga. Just one day after Carrie Fisher's representatives stated that she was joking about her involvement in the new series installment, an interview with series creator George Lucas claimed that the actress, and her original trilogy co-stars were already signed on for the new movie.
"We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison -- or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, 'Look, this is what's going on," Lucas said during an interview with Bloomberg's business week."Maybe I'm not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them. I won't say whether the negotiations were successful or not."
The statement is the latest in what is turning into a confusing story. Carrie Fisher recently told Palm Beach Illustrated that she was indeed confirmed in the upcoming movie. However on Wednesday, her representatives stated that Fisher was joking about her statements in the interview and that there was no confirmation of her involvement in the intergalactic film.
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Episodes IV through VI, also made cautious remarks about his involvement in the project. "They're talking to us," Hamill said during an interview. "George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we'd be interested. He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts - they would write us out. ... I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts. We're in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed -- on their end, not mine. They're more busy than I am."
Harrison Ford was rumored to be involved by Latino Review a few weeks ago, but there has been no confirmation on his end as to whether the star actor will join "Episode 7."
Lucas also mentioned his involvement in the project during the interview. He mentioned that he has attended a number of story meetings and has essentially been on hand to lay out the laws of the Star Wars universe. "I mostly say, 'You can't do this. You can do that,' " He added. "You know, 'The cars don't have wheels. They fly with antigravity.' There's a million little pieces. Or I can say, 'He doesn't have the power to do that, or he has to do this.' I know all that stuff."
