With Anne Hathaway sweeping the Best Supporting Actress award this past season, pundits have started to consider which leading actress will take the honor next year.
Amy Adams is no stranger to this category having been nominated 4 times for Best Supporting Actress. Adams was nominated this past year for the "The Master" and now looks poised to receive her 5th nomination for David O. Russell's untitled film.
After being snubbed for her role in 2011's "Shame," Carey Mulligan could potentially land a nod for one of the two films she has this year. First up she will play the iconic role of Daisy in "The Great Gatsby" and then will star in the Coen brother's "Inside Llewyn Davis."
Vanessa Redgrave seemed like a potential nominee for 2011's "Coriolanus" but was not shortlisted. Redgrave will be in Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" which has spurred massive buzz. While the role is small, the actress demonstrated in 2007's "Atonement" that she can be memorable in anything she plays.
Kristen Scott-Thomas has not been the subject of Oscar talk since 1997 when she received a leading nomination for "The English Patient." The actress has worked in French cinema more often and received buzz in 2008 for "I've Loved You So Long." This year however she will be seen in "Only God Forgives." Scott-Thomas will play Ryan Gosling's mother and will be a ruthless crime boss.
Cameron Diaz may finally receive her first Oscar nomination for the role of Malinka in Ridley Scott's "The Counselor." The role is being compared to Javier Bardem's "No Country for Old Men" villain and one that could make audiences look at Diaz in a different way. However Diaz could end up being overshadowed by Penelope Cruz who will also be in the movie and who took Marion Cotillard's nomination for "Nine" back in 2009.
Other actresses who may have potential for Supporting Actress nods include Viola Davis and Melissa Leo for "Prisoners," Julia Roberts for "August: Osage County" and Alicia Vikander for "The Fifth Estate."
