A married couple who were expecting a child died in New York on Sunday after the car they were in was struck by another vehicle. Authorities and family members say doctors managed to save the life of the child.
Nachman Glauber and his pregnant wife, Raizy, both 21-years-old, were being driven by a car service to a local hospital after Raizy began feeling ill but at an intersection in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn their vehicle was struck by a BMW that pinned Nachman in the car and ejected his wife out on to the street, the Associated Press reports.
Both suffered blunt-force trauma and were later pronounced dead by medical officials, reports say, adding that the driver of their vehicle is in stable condition and police are on the search for the driver and passenger who were in the BMW but fled the scene.
Miraculously, Raizy's baby boy was born prematurely and survived. Reports say the baby is in serious condition but hospital officials have not responded to press inquiries.
The death of the Orthodox Jewish couple has shocked their community who remembered them as happy newlyweds who only a year ago celebrated their marriage.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, as according to Jewish law the dead are to be buried as soon as possible. Hundreds of mourners reportedly gathered outside a Williamsburg synagogue and watched as the caskets carrying the couple were loaded into a vehicle and taken to Nachman's hometown of Monsey, NY, for burial.
Nachman's cousin, Sara Glauber told the Associated Press the following about the couple's relationship: "If one had to go, the other had to go too because they really were one soul."
