Volkswagen is rumored to debut a hybrid plug-in version of their Golf model at the Geneva auto show.

Production of the fuel-efficient vehicle is also expected to begin in 2014.

The Volkswagen Gold Plug-In Hybrid is expected to have the same powertrain of the Audi A3 e-tron model, which is nearing production as well.

A 1.4-liter TSFI gasoline engine that produces 148 horsepower and 256 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 100 horsepower electric motor, will power the new plug-in hybrid.

The top speed of the new Golf is reported to be at 138 MPH with a zero to 60 MPH-time of 7.6 seconds.

The hybrid Gold is rated to get 188 MPG and emit 35g/km of CO2, according to the official EU test cycle.

A six-speed e-S Tronic transmission is also expected for the new Golf and can be operated on just gas, electric-only mode or a combination between the two modes.

On the electric-only mode, the hybrid is expected to have a range of about 30 miles and a top speed of 80 MPH, according to EU testing which is less strict than the U.S. EPA testing protocol.

No pricing information has been released at this time but the new Golf is expected to be more affordable than the Audi A3 e-tron.

The vehicle is expected to launch in 2014.
