Through at least the 2017 season, arguably the best quarterback in the NFL will call Massachusetts his home.
According to Sports Illustrated, Tom Brady signed a three-year, $27 million deal that will keep the two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl Champion with the New England Patriots until, in all likelihood, what could be Brady's final season in 2017 when he turns 40.
The deal is broken down as follows-- Brady will receive $7 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017, with a $3 million signing bonus right off the bat.
A source told USA Today that given Brady's stats and accomplishments, he took what amounts to a discount for a quarterback of his rarefied stature.
However, there's a reason for that, according to what a source told ESPN. Brady feels that by signing a low-ball agreement, New England will have greater cap flexibility to add talented players down the road, as the highly decorated quarterback wants one more shot at another Super Bowl ring before retires.
This deal comes on top of another extension, one for four years, that Brady signed with the Patriots in 2010 for $72 million, which kicked in at the start of the 2011 season.
Brady's storybook career began rather accidentally in Week 2 of the 2001 season, when Drew Bledsoe, at the time the starting quarterback and franchise player for New England, suffered internal bleeding after getting hit hard by New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis.
With head coach Bill Belichek Brady left with no other option, Brady took over the starting job and never relinquished it, leading the Patriots to a memorable Super Bowl championship, the first in the franchise's history, that year.
More than a decade later, Brady has earned three Super Bowl rings, two MVP awards, eight Pro Bowl selections and led the Patriots to five Super Bowls on the way to becoming one of the NFL's most recognizable players.
Last season, Brady threw for 4,827 yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions, earning a 98.7 passer rating. For his career, Brady has thrown for 44,806 yards and 334 touchdowns to earn a stunning 96.6 career passer rating.
In addition, Brady holds the NFL record for most touchdown passes in a single season, 50, which he threw for in 2007, the same season he led the Patriots on a historic 16-0 perfect regular season that ended just shy of a Super Bowl title in a heartbreaking 17-14 loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
Brady also celebrated the birth of his new daughter, Vivian Lake, with supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen in December.
