Overnight, streets throughout Italy and Greece turned into rivers as torrential rains flooded south eastern Europe on Friday leaving many neighborhoods in ruin.
The flood waters have left Athens at a standstill, CCTV reports, as traffic has come to a stop with many vehicles stranded on the roads and some buildings are inaccessible. Blackouts and hundreds of flooded homes are being reported.
Authorities have closed major roadways and subway system. The city's fire department says it received an estimated 1,500 calls reporting flooded homes that need help. One death was reported, a 23-year-old woman who was trapped in her vehicle on a nearby suburban road.
Meteorologist say the area saw about 4-inches of rain during a five-hour long storm, far exceeding the monthly average of 2-inches. The torrential rains may be the worst since a 1961 storm flooded the Italian island of Sicily.
