Only one month old and already a hero, little Milan Piqué is helping UNICEF save lives.
"Milan's friends helped collect 80k polio vaccines, nearly 200k rehydrating salts & 3.8 tons of food," tweeted his mom and Colombian superstar Shakira.
His mom and dad, F.C. Barcelona soccer player Gerard Piqué, joined force with UNICEF back in January of this year to celebrate the arrival if their first born in a nontraditional way, by having an online baby shower to save the lives of children around the world.
"Every expectant parent around the world shares all the same hopes and dreams for their children that we do," said Shakira on a UNICEF press release. "Yet many don't share the same opportunities. Together we know we can change that."
From Jan. 16 to Feb. 16 guests on the site were welcomed into the couple's living room where they could learn about issues of child survival, see pictures of the couple by photographer Jaume Laiguana, and compete to win prizes - CDs and DVDs singed by Shakira, and Barcelona paraphernalia signed by Gerard - by getting social and spreading the word about the shower on their networks.
Fans could also donate gifts which included $5 mosquito nets to help prevent malaria, $10 polio vaccines, $37 suspended baby scale to monitor the weight of babies and toddlers and prevent malnutrition and illness, $50 oral rehydration salts and $110 ready-to-eat therapeutic food.
According to WRadio.com.co, UNICEF added that 1,000 mosquito nets and over 150 portable scales were also donated.
"I want to thank all of you!," tweeted Gerard. "Thanks to you hundreds of thousands of children will be protected in times of need."
Besides the tweets today Shakira and Gerard thanked their fans by publishing photos of the UNICEF packages and sharing a press release on each of the sites.
