On Feb. 22 "Snitch" will open nationwide. The film stars Dwayne Johnson and is directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
The film tells the story of a father John Matthews, who goes undercover for the DEA in order to free his son who was imprisoned after being set up in drug deal.
The film has scored mixed reviews with a 63% aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes. Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter stated, "Unusual for this sort of thing, Snitch is a film for which you remember the characters and actors more than the big action moments."
Peter Debruge of Variety also enjoyed the film stating "Designed to make empathetic citizens question the system, this strangely compelling issue pic plays less to auds' hearts than to their craving for testosterone ..."
John Neumaier of the New York Daily News was not as enthusiastic and stated "Half crime thriller, half family drama, with a bit of legal and behind-prison-walls suspense thrown in, "Snitch" is like watching an elephant on ice: inelegant, but you admire the effort."
Slant Magazine gave the film one star out of four and said "Snitch is the latest in a long line of films whose sole purpose is to flatten a major social problem into a pulp ideal for self-serious spectacle."
Director Waugh last directed the film "Felon" starring Stephen Dorff and Val Kilmer. He will next direct "Currency." Dwayne Johnson has four more films slated for release this year. He will star alongside Mark Wahlberg in "Pain and Gain." He will also star in "GI Joe Retaliation" with Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum and "Empire State" with Emma Roberts and Liam Hemsworth. Johnson will also appear in "Fast and the Furious 6" this summer with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
"Snitch" also stars Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Benjamin Pratt, Nadine Veslaquez and Michael Kenneth Williams. The film is rated PG-13 for drug content and sequences of violence.
