Dozens were injured and 11 people are dead after two bombs exploded in a busy shopping district in southern Indian on Thursday evening.
The bombs were set off only minutes apart around 7 p.m. in the old part of the city of Hyderabad, The Telegraph reports, near a movie theater and a pedestrian bridge by a crowded bus stop. Police say the bombs were hidden inside boxes on bicycles that were in the area.
Officials say the death toll ranges from 11 to 18 people and is expected to rise, reports say. More than 50 people have been hospitalized, many are in critical condition.
Among the injured was Mahesh Kumar, 21, who suffered shrapnel wounds and told The Telegraph he was on his way home when the explosion occurred.
"I heard a huge sound and something hit me, I fell down, and somebody brought me to the hospital," he said.
Authorities labelled the attack as an act of terror and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condemned the bombing. Authorities also said they had prior information about a possible attack and shared their leads with state security agencies as a precaution.
The attack may have been retaliation by supporters of Mohammed Afzai Guru, a Kashnmiri separatist who was hanged earlier this month. Guru was sentenced to death after he was convicted of taking part in the 2001 attack on the Indian parliament that left 10 people dead.
His execution provoked mass protests in the Muslim regions of Indian Kashmir.
