One Direction has released the much-anticipated music video for their new single "One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)," a mashup of the Blondie and The Undertones classics.
The video shows the British boyband singing in London, New York, and other cities throughout their world tour, and also features scenes from their recent charity trip to Ghana. British Prime Minister David Cameron even makes a guest appearance.
"Instead of spending a load of money on a music video, we decided to make it ourselves while we were on tour, and give the money we saved to Comic Relief," Harry Styles says at the beginning of the video.
As we reported yesterday, the release is timed to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Red Nose Day, an annual fundraiser organized by the U.K. charity Comic Relief, reports MTV. "All proceeds from the sales of the Blondie cover will go to the organization and help those affected by famine in Africa," MTV adds.
One Direction has added a unique twist to the Blondie classic, blending it with their own version of "Teenage Kicks." According to MTV, the band's manager and creator Simon Cowell suggested the combination.
"It was Simon Cowell that came up with the idea," producer Julian Bunetta told MTV. "It's a really cheeky song and it's very fun...And I think he wanted to do something that was out of the ordinary that people wouldn't expect."
As of Wednesday afternoon, over 2.8 million fans had viewed YouTube teaser videos previewing the official release, and many Directioners could hardly contain their excitement.
"Cannot wait!! Ahhhhh!! *tries to breathe*" commented one YouTube fan. "This is too much suspense for me to handle," said another. And another swooned over Harry Styles, saying, "I fainted at the end...My hubby, so back off!"
One Direction's latest album Take Me Home charted worldwide and sold 540,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard.
