Arsenal's 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich was the latest stroke of bad news for the club in 2012-13. The defeat was so crippling that manager Arsene Wenger feels that his team must fulfill an "impossible" task to salvage its season.
"We have to try to make the impossible possible," said the Arsenal manger after the loss. "We will have two battles, but maybe the easier battle will be to be back in the Champions League. But we have to give everything to try and change things in the second leg."
He added, "Let's not hide the truth: it will be extremely difficult against a team of that quality. They didn't play two finals in the last three years without that quality. We have to give our best and hope we have built our confidence up a bit more, because that belief will be needed."
Arsenal was behind in the seventh minute when Toni Kroos volleyed in a cross that the Arsenal defense timidly challenged. The team would be down by half-time by the score of 2-0 and would do little to salvage the match. The biggest issue with the loss is that they allowed three away goals; in the case of a tie breaker, the away goal counts twice. This means that Arsenal must go into Bayern Munich and take them down by at least three or more goals; Munich has lost only one game at home this season and has drawn two. More importantly, the German giants have only allowed six goals at home in 11 Bundesliga matches.
Aside from the Champions League, Arsenal is no longer a part of the FA Cup tournament. The team was stunned over the weekend by Blackburn. In the English Premier League, Arsenal is a full 21 points behind first place Manchester United with 12 games left to play; it is a foregone conclusion that they will not win the Premier league this season.
