Aside from the lightsabers, Jedi, and Darth Vader, there has always been one characteristic that has defined the "Star Wars" series: the musical score. Throughout the six films, composer John Williams was mainstay for series creator George Lucas and his memorable score has been considered one of the greatest in film history. When the new series was announced, many questioned whether the veteran composer would return or if new director J.J. Abrams would look to move in a different direction. Also worthy of consideration is the fact that at age 81, Williams would be ready to do another three or more movies.  Despite these potential obstacles, it seems that the legendary composer is determined to take on the franchise once more.

According to a number of reports, the veteran composer told an audience prior to a concert that, "We're about to play Star Wars and each time we play it, I'm reminded of the first time we played it decades ago. Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I'd have to revisit the themes...and years later another trilogy. Now we're hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016...so I need to make sure I'm still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George."

J.J. Abrams has worked on most of his films with composer Michael Giacchino, but Williams' score is a major component of the series and it would be hard to imagine the franchise without such a major component. Hollywood.com suggests that the new direction of films might also benefit from a new musical vision.

Williams is the latest Star Wars vet to express interest in returning to the franchise. Harrison Ford is reportedly signed on to work on the movie while Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have also stated their desire to return for Episode VII.
