This weekend "A Good Day to Die Hard" underperformed while "Safe Haven" and "Escape from Planet Earth" opened above expectations.
The Bruce Willis starrer made an estimated $25 million over the three day weekend. "Die Hard" was expected to hit the $50 million mark over the President's Day weekend and is now expected to make below $40 million. The film scored negative reviews with a 16 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Identity Thief" came in second place and dropped 32 percent. The movie made $23.4 million for a total gross of $70.7 million. "Thief" could become the first film of the year to hit $100 million.
In third place "Safe Haven" surprised making $21 million. The film was only expected to earn $20 million during the four day weekend and is now expected pass $25 million. The film received bad reviews but was helped by its female audience and the Valentine's Day weekend.
"Escape from Planet Earth" also surprised scoring 4th place and $16 million over the weekend. Originally expected to score $10 million over the four days, the Weinsetin Company picture could post $21 million.
The other new release of the weekend "Beautiful Creatures" failed to ignite. The film based on the young adult book series scored $7.5 million.
Oscar nominees "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Zero Dark Thirty" continued to do solid business. "Playbook" made $6 million for a total gross of $98 million. The film will hit the $100 million mark before the Oscar telecast on Sunday. "Thirty" scored $3 million for a total of $88 million.
At the specialty box office the Oscar nominee "No" opened to a notable $74,476 in four theaters. The film was distributed by Sony Classics Pictures.
The Metropolitan Opera's "The Met in HD" continued to do solid business with its one day presentation of "Rigoletto." The production grossed $2.6 million in 800 theaters on Saturday and ranked no.12 overall.
