Despite the $1.05 billion verdict, the Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement lawsuit continues, however, the judge presiding over the case might halt proceedings.
U.S. Judge Lucy Koh has covered the patent infringement case from the start, including the August verdict to award Apple the $1.05 billion. Despite the verdict, both parties have accused additional patent infringements and a second case is scheduled.
Judge Koh, however, has asked for both Apple and Samsung to suspend the case in order for the appeals court can review the August verdict. A decision by the appeals court could determine how to settle the patent cases for both parties.
"I just don't know if we really need two cases on this," Koh said, during a hearing on Thursday.
Attorneys for Apple and Samsung have until March 7 to consent to Judge Koh's statement. It is unclear if both parties will agree as Apple's attorney William Lee stated the upcoming case should be treated differently compared to the first trial since it involves different patents, but Samsung's attorney Victoria Maroulis noted there could be an "overlap" with the two cases.
The second Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement trial is scheduled for March 2014.
