Here's what happened on Pretty Little Liars this week.
Season 3, Episode 19: "What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted"
Spencer is still angry about Toby's deception, and she has become erratic and unreliable---to the point of getting voted off the Decathlon team just a few days before an important championship. She still hasn't told the other girls about Toby's true nature, and keeping it all inside is taking its toll. Her secret grows even more destructive when she finds a message from A scratched onto her sunglasses that reads: "You rat out T, I take down your 3."
All the while, Spencer is furious with Mona for taking her spot on the Decathlon team, especially since she suspects Mona of still being in league with A. She tries to convince the Decathlon team captain to take her back with a racy game of "strip-trivia," and when that doesn't work, she tricks her sister's ex-fiance Wren into driving her to the debate. When Spencer comes face to face with Mona before the competition, she goes crazy for a second and attacks Mona, screaming. Wren covers for her and drives her home.
Meanwhile, Emily meets with Jason and tells him about the photo the girls saw last week of Ali hanging out with Detective Wilden. Jason says he already has his own suspicions about Wilden because he remembers seeing another photo in his dad's study of Ali and Wilden together---along with Cece Drake. He tells Emily that he actually already left Wilden a message so they could talk about the photo, but he hasn't heard back from him.
Jason and Emily sneak into Jason's father's office to find the photo, but when they find the picture and are about to leave, someone traps them in the elevator. Emily manages to escape, but Jason plummets down several stories and crashes. He survives but is severely injured. The photo they had found in his dad's study is mysteriously gone. The girls visit him at the hospital, and when they turn their backs for a second, Jason disappears, too.
While Emily and Spencer deal with A problems, Aria has plenty going on in her personal life. She still misses Ezra, who has gone to visit his ex-girlfriend Maggie after finding out that she gave birth to his son several years ago. Aria is clearly frustrated that she and Ezra are mainly communicating by text. She also has to deal (by phone) with Ezra's overbearing mother, who finds out that Ezra's little brother Wes has been crashing at Ezra's apartment. Aria invites Wes to sleep on her couch until he finds a new place to stay. Later on, Aria and Wes volunteer to help Cece with a photoshoot, and things get suspicious when CeCe disappears for a long time and lies about her whereabouts when she finally contacts them. Could CeCe be the Ali-lookalike in the red coat?
Back at Aria's house, romantic tension builds between her and Wes. They kiss for a moment, but she pushes him away and tells him, "We can't do this."
Meanwhile, Hanna follows a hunch and discovers that Caleb's 'Uncle' Jamie is in fact Caleb's long-lost father. When she tells Caleb, he blows up at her and says he doesn't need his father in his life. Eventually, though, he comes round and agrees to meet with Jamie. The meeting is awkward at first, but by the end of the night, Caleb and Jamie make a real connection. Hanna, wanting to encourage the budding father-son relationship, sets up a job for Jamie with her mom's boyfriend, Pastor Ted. She and Caleb talk alone at the church, and he tells her tearfully how thankful he is, and how much she means to him. Everything seems to be going great...until Hanna realizes that Jamie has stolen money from the church collection box.
The most surprising thing about this episode? Spencer's lips are still sealed about Toby's true identity. Secrets are dangerous in Rosewood, as we know, and it seems like the longer she keeps Toby's betrayal a secret, the more serious the consequences down the line for each of the girls.
