Winter Storm Nemo is expected to pummel the northeast with snow between Friday and Saturday, which means that Sunday will be the perfect time for all of your favorite winter sports. Here are the five best sports to play when the snow is as tall as your boots (or higher). Unleash your inner kid and have some fun in the snow this weekend!
1. Sledding
Any waterproof object large enough to sit on will turn a hill into your best friend after a lot of snow. Be aware of the incline, because even hills that don't appear to be steep can offer a great speed boost. If you'd like an extra challenge, add a jump near the middle of the hill.
2. Snowball Fights
There's no need to pay top dollar for paintball or laser tag, or buy a bunch of playground balls for a game of dodgeball. There's a free alternative that can combine elements from all of them. You can have a battle royale with a large group, try target practice from long distance or mix in some strategy by playing capture the flag, with a snowballs sending intruders to jail (or out of the game entirely).
3. Snowman/Igloo Building
If you'd like to be active outside without working up a sweat, use your creative juices to make a new neighbor! You could also create a cooler version of a clubhouse to have somewhere to hide during snowball fights.
4. Football
Having a lot of snow on the ground works as a great buffer for falling over after being tagged or tackled in America's favorite game. Trying to re-trace your route as a wide receiver has never made it so much easier to move quickly.
5. Hiking/Snowshoeing
You don't have to be in the mountains to brave the elements. Talk a walk around your neighborhood, intentionally stepping in fresh snow, or tie a tennis racket to each foot and stay on top of the pile wherever you go.
As with any outdoor activity, be careful to avoid injury. Black ice or snow with ice covering it are both things to avoid at all costs. Stay dry and warm, and have a glass of hot chocolate when you get back inside!
