The new 2014 Porsche Cayman may finally quell the pleas from car enthusiasts imploring the European automaker to outfit the coupe with enough power to challenge the 911 -- Porsche's star model.
But it doesn't seem like this model of the Cayman is going to oust the 911 from its top spot on the line yet, but it is getting closer, some say -- pumping out 274 horsepower, 20 more than its predecessor.
Expect the third generation to boast a new base engine, updated interior and a more lustrous body that looks less like its aesthetically similar sibling, the Porsche Boxster.
The new Cayman has also undergone a slight growth spurt in that its wheelbase in an inch longer and its wheels have been pushed out 2.5 inches more. But the new model lost some weight and is estimated to be between 60 to 100 pounds lighter.
A smaller engine will live inside the 2014 Cayman, but don't be fooled by the size. The new direct-injected 2.7-liter base engine will run at a higher compression with an increase in acceleration and fuel economy.
Porsche claims the zero to 60 mph time clocks in at 5.1 seconds.
The Cayman S model boasts a 4.4 zero to 60 mph time and keeps the direct-injected 3.4-liter, 325 horsepower engine when outfitted with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
There are some rumors that the German automaker is working on a turbocharged four-cylinder for the Cayman base model, but don't bank on it coming out for the 2014 model year.
Expect a roomier cabin for both the driver and passenger in the new Cayman, while the gauges, dash and center console have a similar look to the newest 911 and Panamera.
The new 2014 Cayman is expected to be released in the spring and will start at $52,600 for the base model and $63,800 for the S trim package.
