New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will do his hip rehabilitation in an undisclosed location, the Yankees said late on Monday. The team does not want the media to interfere with his recovery.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said, "I'm not going to say to try and keep away the extra whatever you want to call it, paparazzi, whatever it is," when asked where Rodriguez' rehab would be on a given day.
ESPN New York reports that Cashman has not spoken to Rodriguez about the recent report from the Miami New Times that claimed A-Rod was a high profile client of a company that supplied HGH and other performance-enhancing drugs to its clients.
Major League Baseball has begun an investigation into the report filed by a former employee of the now-defunct Biogenesis, which allegedly included other MLB players like pitchers Gio Gonzalez and Bartolo Colon, outfielder Melky Cabrera and catcher Yasmani Grandal. The last three of those listed have already been given suspensions, with Grandal serving his to start the 2013 campaign and the other two finished with theirs.
Rodriguez had his second career hip surgery earlier this season. A few years ago, he had a similar (though not exactly the same) procedure on his other hip. The former shortstop has 647 career home runs and has previously admitted to using PED's, though he claimed his use stopped before he joined the Yankees in 2004. A-Rod has received the two largest contracts in American sports history: one for 10 years and $252 million from the Texas Rangers (which he opted out of) and one for 10 years and $275 million. His still has over $100 million and five years remaining on his current deal.
A-Rod's career stats are available on baseballreference.com.
In other Yankees news, first baseman Mark Teixeira admitted he was overpaid, though he said it's hard for any $20 million-per-year player to actually make his team money.
