"Warm Bodies" took home the Super Bowl weekend box office while Sylvestor Stallone's new film "Bullet To The Head" bombed.
The Jonathan Levine zombie movie did solid business with an estimated gross of $19.5 million. "Warm Bodies" ranked as the seventh highest opening for a Super Bowl weekend. The film obtained generally good reviews and the audience was made up of 60 percent female.
In second place "Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters" fell 53 percent making an estimated $9.2 million. The hold was bad but considering no word of mouth and the poor reviews, it generally did well. The film stands at $34.5 million and should end its run with $45 to $50 million.
The Academy Award nominee "Silver Linings Playbook" continued to do solid business and finished the weekend in third place. The movie made $8.1 million, bringing its total to $80.4 million. "Playbook" now looks to be the sixth 2013 Oscar Best Picture nominee to hit $100 million.
Jessica Chastain's films "Mama" and "Zero Dark Thirty" ranked fourth and fifth. "Mama" made $6.73 million for a total of $58.3 million. It became the highest grossing horror film since 2011's "Paranormal Activity 3." "Zero Dark Thirty" made $5.3 million, bringing its cumulative gross to $77.8 million. It now looks set to make $90 million by the end of its run.
"Bullet to the Head," starring Sylvester Stallone, only made $4.5 million and is the third consecutive action movie after "Parker" and "Last Stand" to have a poor opening weekend. The film's audience was made up of 60 percent male and 81 percent over the age of 25.
The third new release "Stand up Guys" ranked 17th place for an intake of $1.5 million at 659 theaters. The film scored bad reviews and received no marketing push.
