This year's Davis Cup 2013 kicked off with the first round of games between World Group members.
Kazakhstan hosted the first game of the tournament and played against Austria, who lost the first two points of the games. The two countries squared off again on Saturday for their doubles match, with Austria taking home their first point. Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev and Yurly Schukin played a close match against Austria's Julian Knowle and Alexander Peya (24), ultimately losing 6(5)-7, 3-6 and 6(3)-7. The two teams will play their final two singles matches on Sunday. The winner of the first round will face the winners of the Switzerland-Czech Republic matchup during the quarterfinals.
Switzerland and the Czech Republic were the next teams to compete, with each taking home one point during Day 1. Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka (17) defeated the Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol during the first match, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4. However, Czech player Tomas Berdych (6) won the second match between the two countries, defeating Switzerland's Henri Laaksonen in four sets, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(5) and 1-6.
Belgium and Serbia faced off next, with Serbia defeating Belgium in the first two singles matches. Belgium's David Goffin (50) played a tough five-set game, ultimately losing to Serbia's Viktor Troicki (39), 6-1, 6-3, 6(5)-7, 4-6 and 4-6. The next match put Belgium's Olivier Rochus in an uphill battle as he played against No.1 seeded Serb Novak Djokovic. Djokovic easily won the match in three sets, 3-6, 2-6 and 2-6. The winner of the first round will face the winners of the USA-Brazil matchup during the quarterfinals.
Team USA seems poised to move on to the quarterfinals after taking home the first two points of their matchup against Brazil. American Sam Querrey (20) easily won his match against Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci (36) in three sets, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4. John Isner (16) and Thiago Alves faced off during the next match, with Isner winning three sets, 6-3, 7-6(4) and 6-3.
France and Israel battled it out for the day's first two points, with France coming out on top. French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (8) played the first match against Israeli Amir Weintraub and won the match in four sets, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6 and 7-5. No. 10-seeded Richard Gasquet played next against Israel's Dudi Sela and defeated him in three easy sets, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2. The winner of the first round will face the winners of the Argentina-Germany matchup during the quarterfinals.
Argentina bested Germany during its first two matches, taking them one step closer to the quarterfinals. It was a long five-set game between Argentine Carlos Berlocq and German Philipp Kohlschreiber (19), with Berlocq ultimately winning the game, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 and 3-4. The second match, between Juan Monaco (12) and Florian Mayer (28), wasn't any easier, with Argentine Monaco winning three of the four sets played, 6-(4)-7, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4.
Italy and Croatia played two long singles match, leading to a 1-1 score by the end of Day 1. Croatia's Marin Cilic (13) defeated Italian Paolo Lorenzi during the five-set first game, 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-4, 3-6 and 2-6. Italian Andreas Seppi (18) then took home the first point for Italy when he defeated Croatian Ivan Dodig in four sets, 6-2, 6(2)-7, 6-4 and 6-4. The winner of the first round will face the winners of the Spain-Canada matchup during the quarterfinals.
The last group matchup to play was Spain and Canada, with Canada taking home the first two points of the first round. Spain's Albert Ramos fought hard but ultimately lost to Canadian Milos Raonic in four sets, 6(5)-7, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4. The second singles match proved to be a bit easier for Canadian Frank Dancevic beating Spaniard Marcel Granollers (34) in three sets, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2.
The teams will face off on Saturday for their first and only doubles matches. The first round of the Davis Cup will conclude on Sunday, February 3. Watch the day's matches live here.
