A magnitude-6.7 earthquake shook northern Chile on Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey announced. The earthquake, which occurred at 4:15 p.m. local time, was centered 27 miles north of Vallenar at a depth of 29.5 miles (47.5 km).

According to the Associated Press, Chilean authorities said that they have not received reports of injuries or damage. The quake shook the Chilean capital of Santiago 364 miles away, causing building to sway.

Chile's national broadcasting network, TVN, reported that the Servicio Hidrográfico y Oceanográfico de la Armada (Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy) that the earthquake did not create the right the "necessary conditions" to create a tsunami on the Chilean coast.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has also not issued a tsunami warning or watch. According to the AFP, the center, which is located in Hawaii, said that that a preliminary report based on historical data show that no destructive widespread tsunami threat existed.
