Passing gun control measures might have lost some voters for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo passed the NY SAFE Act which limited the number of rounds in a magazine and tighter bans on assault weapons.
With what appears to be a result of signing the act, Cuomo's job approval ratings has slumped.
In a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University, the New York governor's approval rating stands at 59 percent while 28 percent disapproves. The approval rating is down from the 74 percent seen in December.
"With approval ratings that consistently topped 70 percent, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had the political capital to spend when he set out to pass the toughest gun control laws in the nation," said Quinnipiac University Polling Institute Director Maurice Carroll. "It is possible that the gun law cost him some of that political capital, but a 2-1 job approval rating still makes him the envy of most governors."
When it comes to non-gun homes, Cuomo's numbers improve to 68 percent while 19 percent disapprove. In gun owners polled disapprove at 50 percent to 40 percent.
When it comes to gender, the numbers are down for Cuomo. Women approve of Cuomo's work with 64 percent while 23 percent disapprove, but that is down from the 73 percent approving to 12 percent disapproving from Quinnipiac's previous poll. Among men, the approval rating stands at 54 percent, down 20 percent from the 74 percent last month.
The poll was conducted between Jan. 23 and 28 with 1,127 New York voters surveyed by landline and cellphone calls.. The margin of error is 2.9 percent.
