Your neighbors aren't always who you think they are. At least they aren't in FX's new spy drama, 'The Americans,' airing on Wednesday, featuring Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as a KGB spy couple living and working in the United States.
The 1980s-set drama has the large task of getting American audiences to side with the two Soviet spies, who are risking everything, including their two unsuspecting American children (played by Holly Taylor and Keidrich Sellati) to help the Motherland.
Phillip Jennings (Rhys) and his spy wife Elizabeth (Russell) are nothing more than your average suburban D.C. travel agents to their children (a13-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son) and neighbors. The two, who were thrust into their marriage through orders of the KGB, are forced to struggle with everyday life as the spy agency places more responsibilities on them.
According to USA Today, Phillip and Elizabeth will also have another hurdle to face, an FBI agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) who has moved in next door and is tasked to uncovering sleeper cells like theirs. A rift between the couple will develop between the fiercely loyal Elizabeth and the more Americanize Phillip.
Former CIA officer and spy novelist Joe Wiesberg created the thrill-seeking drama, which is set to air on Wednesday, January 30. Weisberg's past series include sci-fi thriller 'Falling Skies' and crime drama 'Damages.'
'The Americans' pilot airs on Wednesday, January 30 at 10 p.m. EST on FX.
