JJ Abrams is the new director of the upcoming "Star Wars Episode VII" but he may not keep to Disney's timetable.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director is not committed to keeping with the 2015 release date originally planned by Disney. Hollywood Reporter Kim Masters writes that "Episode VII is set for release in 2015, but sources say Abrams has not committed to that release date, meaning the date could be changed if the development process requires it."

The official Disney press release that announced Abrams' hiring did not indicate a release date. According to Digital Spy, Abrams is known for not rushing his projects. He recently refused to rush "Star Trek Into Darkness" for a 2012 release; the film is now slated for a summer 2013 launch.

Abrams is not booked to direct any other films at the moment, but he does have a busy producing schedule coming up in the next few years and it is likely that he wants to have sufficient time to make a good "Star Wars" film. In addition to producing and directing "Star Wars," Abrams is signed on to produce "Mission Impossible 5" and the upcoming "Cloverfield" movie.  "Mission Impossible" is slated for a 2015 release while "Cloverfield" does not have a launch date.

Abrams is still tied to Paramount's "Star Trek series" and will also have to split duties between the two franchises in coming years.
