Kelly Clarkson might have some advice for Beyonce: mushrooms.

Apparently that's the secret to singing live in the cold.

"The night before Kelly rocked the National Mall in front of more than 800,000 people, she and a few friends carbo-loaded at Buca di Beppo in D.C. -- and as everyone knows by now, it clearly paid off," writes TMZ.

"We're told Kelly and co. feasted on lasagna, bruschetta, stuffed mushrooms, half-pound meatballs, spaghetti, chicken parmigiana -- and the always delicious colossal brownie sundae, all for a cool $230."

While there's no guarantee it was the mushrooms that aided Clarkson's performance the following day, it can't hurt, right?

"She then took some photos with kitchen staff and, feeling sated and satisfied, went off to get some rest before her big sing," writes The Atlantic. "And look how well it went. See, NKOTB and Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees? That's what you gotta do before a big event. Be with the people, eat the people's food. Forget the LES. Also, Beyoncé? What'd you do the night before? Pick over some quail eggs with Gwyneth Paltrow in her crystal hot air balloon? Just goes to show you. Proper preparation is everything."

Of course, Beyonce might have just been making a good call, considering the weather at the inauguration. The National Anthem is a notoriously difficult song to sing in the best conditions.

Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin didn't seem to think Beyonce did anything wrong. While she sang live at Obama's first inauguration four years ago, she said it made sense that Beyonce might have switched to a backing track at the last minute, and that it was her prerogative as a performer.
