Rex Ryan Smashes His Mustang and Other New York Jets Maladies

Embattled New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan had much more pressing issues than a game last week near the Jets' training camp. His own personal offside penalty resulted in a three-car accident in Bethlehem, Pa., TMZ reports.

Ryan was driving his mustang when he ran a red light and collided with one car, which hit another car. A police officer described the intersection as, "a blind hill to some degree.

Ryan received a warning but not a ticket for his actions. According to a police report, Ryan admitted he ran a red light, but insisted that he was not speeding.

Rumors suggest Ryan was in town to meet with New York's new offensive coordinator, Marty Mornhinweg.

The Jets also recently hired a new General Manager, as Mike Tannenbaum was fired in December. John Idzik replaces Tannenbaum. Idzik was most recently the Vice President of Football Administration for the Seattle Seahawks. ESPN has a profile of Idzik here.

New York went 6-10 this past season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The Jets have missed post-season play in four of the last six seasons, but made it to the AFC Championship Game in both 2009 and 2010 (each time losing to the eventual Super Bowl Champion).

The Jets were mired in a quarterback controversy for much of the 2012 season because of the lackluster performance of Mark Sanchez. One of the most polarizing figures in football, Tim Tebow, was supposedly the second-string quarterback the entire year, but was passed over for Greg McElroy. When McElroy got injured, Sanchez was sent back out instead of Tebow.

Ryan has a tattoo of his wife wearing a Sanchez jersey and in a position called, "Tebowing," which the QB made popular by getting down on one knee. Ryan said he has had the tattoo since well before Tebow joined the team and the position is just a coincidence.

The owner of the Jets, Woody Johnson, said recently that he was forced into trading for Tebow, further complicating the issues in the Meadowlands.
